The famous city of Marrakech, the second oldest Imperial city, has for centuries been an important stop for traders and travellers.  Continuing this tradition, Marrakech has become a renowned international destination, with its colourful souks, markets and restaurants.  Founded nearly a thousand years ago by the Almoravides dynasty, one of the great cities of the Maghreb, Marrakech is set against the spectacular snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains.  Buildings are blushed in hues of rosy earth, and horse drawn carriages clip along the broad avenues lined with palm, lime and orange trees.  Visit the Menera Gardens, the famous Jardins de Majorelle, the Bahia Palace, the Saadien tombs, the Jewish cemetery, and the most revered of Islamic monuments, the Koutoubia Mosque.

A must see is the Djemaa El Fna Square; the centre square of the medina which comes alive at night with storytellers, musicians, entertainers, snake charmers and the scent of delicious food being grilled over hot coals.  Wind your way through the spice scented souks and handicraft quarters; a riot of colour, noise and motion.  Watch the gold, silver, copper, wood, silk and leather artisans at work, or take a moment to absorb an aerial view of the bustling square with a quiet cup of tea on the terrace of an adjacent cafe
